Sharing a meal with people is truly a magical experience. I learned this from my godmother, Bertha, when I was a young boy growing up in the Poconos. Each week, I’d watch as she’d prepare a family style dinner for 10-15 people. She didn’t own a restaurant, she just had five wonderful daughters who each had families of their own. There was always room at Bertha’s table, and she kept it full with characters. If you were at the table, the only reason you wouldn’t be laughing or smiling was because you had food in your mouth.
The people who I ate with at that table became my family, despite the fact I wasn’t related to any of them. Now that I’m older, I want to continue Betha’s legacy of building community through food. So step 1, I built a big table.
